Scientists are now using a robotic submarine on loan from Sweden to help clear the deep trench off the coast, in a survey that could help predict fallout from future disasters.

The small robotic submarine was tested at Wellington Harbor, opposite the NIWA research vessel, before its journey south.

“It’s designed to fly down the ocean and survey near the sea floor, like 50 meters above the sea floor, while we’re going to survey from a ship and maybe 1,000 meters above the water,” NIWA marine geologist Joshua Mountjoy told 1NEWS.

The Kaikoura Valley is about 60 kilometers long and 2000 meters deep. It was transformed by the 2016 earthquake.

Under the waves, there was undersea turbulence. 850 million tons of sediments flowed through the valley.

“It caused a large number of landslides that basically collected an enormous amount of mud without it and flowed out of the valley and traveled at least 600 kilometers along the sea floor,” said Mountjoy.

The battery-powered submarine is using sonar to help scientists create a clearer picture of how the sea floor is interacting.

“We really want to understand how those sediments moved. Then we understand the mechanism of landslides in particular,” said Mountjoy.

“These landslides could have triggered a tsunami. It didn’t happen in this case, but if it was much bigger, it could have happened.”

It is a technology that has not been used before in New Zealand and scientists have about a month to use it before it returns to Europe.

The submarine was shipped from Sweden in a container.

It is on loan from a Swedish university under an arrangement with the European Union which makes the multi-million dollar piece of equipment free for the use of New Zealand scientists.

It would also provide insight into how marine life is recovering after four years of changing its habitat forever.
