OES announces an earthquake warning campaign
SACRAMENTO – The California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services announced today the launch of a public awareness campaign to educate all California residents about the innovative California Earthquake Warning System – California Earthquake Warning. The campaign, “Don’t Do Not Be Watched,” directs California residents to free tools, resources and information, including the MyShake smartphone app, Android Earthquake alerts, Government Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEAs), and an earthquake. .
Building on the success of the first-of-its-kind seismic warning system in California, the “Stay tuned Guard” educational campaign will deliver messages through advertising channels including digital, social and broadcast ads, as well as outreach community and industry organizations to increase awareness of available technology. The campaign will run until 2022 with an optional one-year extension.
“California is proud to have the first statewide earthquake warning system, and now word is spreading widely about this innovative new life-saving system,” said Mark Gillarducci, Director of Cal OES. “The Cal OES leadership made it easy to make warnings available to the public. The public can now have warning moments before previously unexpected natural disasters strike. It’s changing the world of mitigation and emergency management.”
The budget approved last year included one-off public funding of $ 16.3 million to finish construction of the California Earthquake Warning System on the backbone of the California Integrated Earthquake Network (CISN), including the completion of the seismic station installation, the addition of GPS stations to the network, and the improvement of Telemetry.
CISN provides the ground motion data needed to estimate earthquake magnitude, location and expected shaking and to issue the ShakeAlert® warning.
California Governor Gavin Newsom’s budget for this year includes an additional $ 17.3 million appropriation, backed by a one-time loan of the same amount from the School Land Bank Fund, for full operation and maintenance of the system. The general fund budget also calls for a public awareness campaign to remind Californians that seconds matter when warning mobile device users in the area before the ground begins to vibrate.
The creative, multi-lingual approach of the “Don’t Be Troubled Watch” campaign uses attitudes to be associated with while delivering a serious message encouraging individuals and their families to have tools ready to alert them as soon as an earthquake is detected by ground sensors.
The broadcast ad features a mixture of humorous, unexpected and unintended scenes of real people caught by surprise and encourages people to use California earthquake warning resources to give them extra time to protect themselves in the event of an earthquake.
For example, a 30-second radio commercial features an unsuspecting woman posing for a photo on the beach suddenly engulfed by the ocean wave, a child playing the piano swinging from a bench on the floor, and a man falling from the ceiling at a construction site. In another 15-second clip, a mixed soft drink explodes on a young man, and an elderly man is stunned when a butterfly flutters from a greeting card. Advertisements and other digital assets can be found at the following website: Zurake.ca.gov.
Don’t Get Caught Off Guard is encouraging fans to learn more about earthquake preparedness by visiting the website, which includes instructions to download the free MyShake app, or enable Android Earthquake Alerts and WEA alerts on smartphones. The website also provides the opportunity to register for current news and information, participate in virtual public presentations, and download industry-specific media resources.
The campaign features statewide ads that deliver messages to diverse audiences. Over the course of nearly two years, the campaign has allocated more than $ 420,000 to ethnic television (Spanish, Cantonese, Mandarin, and Vietnamese). There is more than $ 1 million dedicated to television advertising for the public market. Nearly $ 2.3 million will go to digital advertising, which includes digital, social, and audio broadcasts.
The campaign will also involve business and civic groups, government agencies, policymakers, charities, religious organizations, and social services to deliver messages to families, employees, members, and followers. Industry and public toolkits are available for download in multiple languages at the Earthquake Warning California website.
The announcement comes ahead of the Great California ShakeOut event and International ShakeOut Day, which takes place Thursday, October 15th.
By following COVID-19 health and safety guidelines, organizations such as schools and employers, as well as single families, are encouraged to conduct the ShakeOut exercise on October 15 or around October 15, in the last year 10.8 million Californians participated in the Great California ShakeOut.
“Through the broad messaging and targeted outreach launched in October, we believe organizations across the state will be passionate about helping millions of residents take earthquake preparedness steps,” Gillarducci said. “Education, facilities, first responders, public safety, transportation, and others can play a vital role in preventing injuries and minimizing the risks of other hazards in the event of the next big event.”

View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price. Using brokerage websites will allow drivers to get quotes from multiple insurers, thus making the comparison faster and easier.
