Not a joke April Fool’s joke: Peterborough’s first legal cannabis store opens on Wednesday

This is not a problem in April: Growers Retail, the first legal cannabis retailer in Peterborough, will finally open its doors to the public on Wednesday (April 1st).

Located at 225 George Street, downtown Peterborough (across from No Frills Street), the store will operate from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The store, owned by parent company Huge Shops, was originally approved by the Ontario Alcohol and Play Commission (AGCO), and is next to coffee time on the Fowlers Corners Plateau on Highway 7. However, after the communal zones were issued, the store banned it from opening at the site, Huge Shops again sought approval of a cannabis store in downtown Peterborough. AGCO approved the new location.

The Peterborough Examiner reported that the store will have 97 products, including as many as 40 cannabis strains. There will be a range of cannabis products and accessories, including dried flower, edible products, vapi and current products, paper, pipe and bong.

The store will employ 20 staff who are trained as “wake-ups” to explain products to customers.

Although the Ontario Government considered legal cannabis to be an important workplace during the COVID-19 pandemic, opening a pandemic shop poses particular challenges.

“COVID is definitely a big obstacle for us to get over,” says Darryl Jessop, Huge Shops vice president for The Examiner. “Just to be sure when we opened it, it was done in a safe way, ethically and morally.”

Another company, Happy Dayz Peterborough, has also sought the approval of a cannabis store for its current location at 291 George Street North in downtown Peterboro. The application is currently in public notification status.
