Earthquake Safety and Preparedness Day is held on the third Thursday of October every year, when millions of California residents and people around the world practice earthquake safety and preparedness.

During the October 15 Exit Earthquake, sponsored by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES), California residents, including Santa Clarita residents, are encouraged to create and conduct earthquake drills from wherever they are to be more prepared. According to the procedure, people experiencing an earthquake are encouraged to fall on their hands and knees to help them stay balanced and stay low to crawl into the shelter.

Then, they must cover their necks with an arm and one hand and crawl either under a sturdy table or next to an inner wall away from windows, and bend over to protect their internal organs.

Finally, people trapped in an earthquake should hold onto their shelters with one hand, and move with them if they change. If no shelter is available, it is best for people who follow the procedure to stick to their heads and necks with both arms and hands.

The city also encouraged residents to prepare and secure their accommodations, create individual plans for the steps to be taken during the earthquake, organize supplies, reduce financial pressures, and stay informed.
