Over the past 60 years, the National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI) has contributed to seismic zoning of earthquake risk, aquifer mapping, diamond results, and research in the field of earth sciences. The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) took charge of CBG, which later led to the creation of NGRI. It was on October 11, 1961, we started from a small center at Othmaniyah University. In 1962, we moved to our current 150-acre campus. We started airborne geophysical studies in 1966 with aircraft, and now we are in the stage of using drones. With the help of Russia, we conducted a deep seismic sounding. We discovered the oldest Indian rock in Odisha in 2018, which is 3.9 billion years old. n What are the major contributions of NGRI, especially to geophysics? NGRI is built and supported by talented and dedicated scientists. NGRI publishes the largest number of papers in Earth sciences. Groundwater studies have helped define aquifers and their dynamics. n How does the NGRI Seismology Suite work towards seismic alerts and mapping? Are there changes in seismic zoning in the country? In 1967, the seismological observatory was established for the first time and the instruments were calibrated to conform to the global seismograph network. Some of the main findings include thick crust under the Himalayas and in Tibet. We launched deep seismic sounding (DSS) in 1972 under the Indo-Soviet Cooperative Program. The first DSS profile from the East Coast to the West Coast of India from Cavalli to Udipi provided crust thickness and deep-penetration rift zones engineering for Dharwar Greenstone belts. We discovered that areas of the Koyna Reservoir cause a series of earthquakes. We are currently drilling a 7 km deep hole in Koyna and have already undertaken a pilot project of 3 km from the well to find out more about earthquakes. Are there any recent discoveries of minerals, especially hydrocarbons, gold, diamonds and other precious metals in India, especially Telangana and AP? An exploration project integrated with geophysical and remote sensing resulted in the discovery of diamond-rich kimberlite in the Vagrakarur region of AP.
