Tsunami sirens to sound the craters

Tsunami sirens will sound at 10:15 am Thursday as the two Northern Olympic provinces participate in the International Great Washington ShakeOut earthquake exercises.

Emergency management officials encourage people to “land, cover, and hold” during alert, and be aware of how to get to safety in the event of an earthquake or tsunami, as well as general emergency preparedness.

As of Monday, 7,889 residents were registered to participate in Clamam County and 2,093 residents were registered to participate in Jefferson County, according to the national registry at shakeout.org. People are not required to register to participate, but they are encouraged.

“It’s just a good idea,” said Kebby Kiplinger, media officer for the Jefferson County Emergency Department. “ The beauty of this jolt is that you don’t have to get dressed and go anywhere, you can do it at home or in your office.

“Look around, find a sturdy table that you can put underneath, and practice that, because if you do it many times, you don’t have to stop and think too much about it when the time comes that you need to do it.”

ShakeOut began in Southern California in 2008 and is now a global endeavor.

The aim of the exercises is to encourage the public to practice how to respond to an earthquake situation, particularly due to the Cascadia Subduction Zone, where large-scale earthquakes are possible and small earthquakes are common.

Boycott and Jefferson Speech will hear All Hazard Alert Broadcasting starting at 10:15 a.m., and a tsunami warning tone will be played as part of the drill.

Ann Chastain, Clallam County’s Emergency Management Coordinator, encourages people to take the time to analyze where they are and where they will need to be to safety during an earthquake.

“In the past, we used to burden us with ‘landing, covering, and sticking,’ and what we want to do now is just start the conversation,” Chastain said. “If you look where you are when these sirens go off, this is likely where you will be when an actual earthquake strikes.

“So it could be in the parking lot of a grocery store, it might be in your dentist’s office, it might be at work, at school, all the places you usually go to in one day are the places you could be when an earthquake strikes,” She continued.

“So what we want people to do is to exercise some awareness of whether this is going to happen now – especially with us with the Cascadia Subduction off our coasts which could be a catastrophic event – you have to be prepared.”

Keplinger and Chastain both recommend people have emergency kits on hand, with important items such as scanning important documents – birth certificate, driver’s license, Social Security card, etc. – on a password-protected flash drive, cash in cases Emergencies, water, non-perishable food and more.

Kepplinger said Jefferson County has created a Disaster Plan and Go-Kit guide titled “Think, Plan, Do” which is available at bit.ly/thinkplando.

A tsunami could happen after an earthquake in both provinces, and the state’s Department of Natural Resources has evacuation maps that can be found at tinyurl.com/PDN-Tsunami map.
