The annual Great California ShakeOut Drill is set for Thursday October 15th, and will give millions of Southern California residents – along with the rest of the state and beyond – a chance to practice safety techniques in the event of a major earthquake.

As of Tuesday, more than 2.3 million Los Angeles County residents signed up for ShakeOut.org to participate in trainings for “drop, cover, and hold” – along with nearly 500,000 in Orange County and 70,000 in Ventura County.

More than 27 million people have signed up to participate in the exercise worldwide.

“Destructive earthquakes can strike at any time, and the Great California ShakeOut is an important reminder of what we need to do to survive and recover,” California Earthquakes Authority Chief Executive Glenn Pomeroy said in a statement. At 10:15 a.m., participants – including students, government employees, business employees, and families – will be instructed to fall to the ground and hide under a desk, table, or other strong surface and stay for 60 seconds, as if the earthquake was taking place.

During an actual earthquake, outdoor people should find a clear spot away from trees, power lines, and other things that could tip.
