Day 17 – April fool

Today is a special day for American journalists – more problems have been created by so-called columnists like the YRS. True to see D. B. Cooper playing with Jimmy Hoff’s golf, or a smoke alarm with a five-minute snooze switch than one can count. April Fool – We Got You !!

But not this April. Our people are at war; in a war with an invisible bug that we neither understand nor really accept it as an enemy – even though we do. I put myself in that last category. I spent most of March like Pollyanna – hiding her head in the sand a la la ostrich. It doesn’t happen I will write a column everyday and everyone will forget about “everything”, no matter what “it”.

And I will continue to write, the usual things on the wall, but today is special: a new moon begins, a more transient moment in our maturation. On March 1, few of us knew – I didn’t – about coronavirus. For me, reality began to form before or at the time of gelatinizing our annual St. Patrick’s Day dinner. Maybe we don’t have one? This is sure to pass.

But it didn’t work If the whole medical problem were labeled blarney – which it won’t be – our schools are in a bigger miasma than a month ago, which we thought they couldn’t be. And it’s not just in Washoe County – my grandchildren are lost in the San Mateo community, and my grandson, in his first year of graduation at Washington State in Pullman, is home with his dad and mom in San Francisco. And Mom is an engineer working from home. Ha! And the economy is in a mess. And we can’t go to Shenanigan on Thursdays for beer and wings. Even Danger! got out of the way …

We are starting a new business in Midtown, which I guess now deserves capital with an “M”, but I don’t know why. Great pizza – Food drink the name of the place is pleasant people on both sides of the counter, patrons and staff. If he survives, he’ll be lucky. And they richly deserve to survive and succeed.

On the first Monday of the month, twenty guys – mostly Reno High Husky, but with a few sparkles of High Railroaders eagerly welcomed – convene at Coney Island Bar and Sally brings us lunch. I’ve been doing this for a long time. We were probably in the early 60’s when that started. Now, most of us are only on the sunny side of the 80’s for a few years and most have had a few health problems along the way. We are what they now call a compromised group.

If we can believe, and I think we can, medical sages, we will only need a table for 12 or 14 in Coney in a year. We are doomed.

Let my Black Diner coffee friends know – the same group demographic, five or six regular guys (up from 20 in the 1980s!). When we meet again, we can come up with a table for four. IF we meet again. And that hurts.

And to a lesser extent – the two most important ladies of my life – my sister and the woman I’m really close with – are sharing my birthday on Friday, April 3rd. They look good for this year, but will they both be with us in 2021? I do not know…..

Yes, it’s April 1st, but April Fools is out of sight today. We will gather tomorrow and I will hang out with some BS gathered during our hamlet life. But not today. Not likely on May 1st, could be June 1st. But if Gilmour, Liberati, Pat Conway, the Great Creator, WC Handy and John Phillip Sousa are not on the Fourth of July at a new roundabout in Southern Virginia and Center Streets, ready to 76 lead the Trombones south to the new Reno. .. Hell, I don’t know what I’m going to do but this can’t last forever …

Anyway – maybe in a year from this day, if This is Reno I’m still there and I’m still alive and writing I’m sending you all out for a wild goose hunt with a proper April Fool column. But this year we are a little overwhelmed by the circumstances. We’ll have more fun here; the darkness pervades if you want to read it, but my deal with Bob Conrad doesn’t think about the darkness.

Tomorrow’s a new day here And, rest assured, huh?
