One mid-October day in 1989, baseball fans expected nothing more than a high-stakes match between the Oakland Athletic and the San Francisco Giants, when a terrible disaster struck.

“I was watching the preliminary match when veteran painters Tim McCarver summed up Game 2 when Dave Parker shot A player in the right corner, then Giants’ Team Kandy Maldonado seemed hesitant before throwing late to second base allowing Jose Canseco to cross the home board with a run Chris May, the Weather Network presenter, who was watching the match at the time, recalls. “That was when the picture was suddenly blurred and the sound came in and out … it all happened very quickly.”

It was a powerful 7.1-magnitude earthquake, centered in the Santa Cruz Mountains and shook the region from Santa Cruz to Oakland, perpetuating that world championship as a “series of earthquakes” among baseball fans.

But even though the stadium was good enough, the damage to the rest of the San Francisco area was significant. Several buildings collapsed, and shattered gas pipelines led to fires that spiraled out of control for nearly two days.

As for the iconic city bridges, the Golden Gate Bridge did suffer from some vibrations, but the Nimitz Expressway, San Francisco Bay and Oakland Bay Bridge have all collapsed.

In all, about 67 people were killed, including 41 who died in the collapse of the Nimitz Highway, and the earthquake caused an estimated $ 5 billion in losses in 1989, a blow that caused a recession that lasted until the early 1990s.
