Illegal fishing and marine disaster detection sensors by students of Intelligent Transportation Systems
Five students from Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) Surabaya have innovated in the marine sector by creating an underwater technology sensor that is being installed at the water border of Indonesia.
Mohamed Mercyid, Ghafari Hanif Mustafa, Ahmed Fahmy Brakoso, Edo Daniilan, Diyanisyah and Wafi El Din are behind this innovation, who worked together to create the Non-Human Underwater Sensor (HUST) technology.
Team leader, Weldan Mohamed Morsayed, explained that HUST is an innovative endeavor that works to discover unauthorized ships or vessels suspected of illegal fishing. “HUST technology can also be used to detect marine disasters such as the submarine earthquake and tsunami,” he added.
Weldan noted that the idea arose for many reasons. One of them is that the number of illegal fishing cases that have occurred in Indonesian territorial waters has remained high. If this problem persists, it may cause a rapid decline in fish biomass in territorial waters.
Weldan said Indonesia currently does not have adequate development of underwater seismic and sensing technology. Indonesia only has detection sensors (Seismic Network) which only work in mainland areas. Therefore, HUST is expected to be an alternative method for sensors (seismic networks) in watery areas and, ultimately, it can improve the accuracy of current detection systems.
The team leader also continued that the HUST system operates under three sensors. These are seismic sensors to detect sea floor vibrations, mineral sensors to detect approaching ships, and identity sensors to detect identity transmitters that already have fishing permits in border areas.
In operation, HUST’s system and detector can provide four types of information: normal conditions (without visible vibrations), vibrations detected, licensed vessels, and illegal vessels. The data obtained by HUST will be delivered to the Monitoring Center via signal transmitters.
Moreover, the received data can be further processed and verified by using satellite images in the detection coordinate area. If illegal ships are detected, the post can assign personnel to take strict action to respond to the situation. The post also sends notifications to the Agency for Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics (BMKG) if shaking is detected so that they can immediately analyze the likelihood of a tsunami.
With this innovation, these ITS students were able to excel at the World Exhibition of Invention and Competition (WICE) held on September 12, 2020. In the five-day competition, Weldan and his team won a gold medal in this competition organized by the Indonesia Young Scientists Association (IYSA) and College SEGI College Subang Jaya Malaysia. Moreover, they also received a special award from the Malaysia Foundation for Innovation, Invention and Creativity (MIICA).

View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price.
