NEWS: Catalonia declares independence – BBC News

The regional parliament of Catalonia has voted to declare independence from Spain, as it seems that the Spanish government will impose direct rule. The move came in 70-10 in a vote boycotted by opposition lawmakers. Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy had earlier told senators that direct authority was needed to bring “law, democracy and stability” back to Catalonia. The crisis began when Catalans sided with independence in the debated votes earlier this month. The Catalan government has said that 90% of the 43% who took part in the referendum are in favor of independence. But the Spanish Constitutional Court ruled the vote illegal. The Spanish Senate is yet to vote on the enactment of Article 155 of the Spanish constitution for the first time, which empowers the government to take “all measures to force” a region in the event of a crisis. Madrid would allow the dismissal of Catalan leaders, and control of the region’s finances, police and public media. Please subscribe HERE
