Labor Party: Keir Starmer’s Way to Power – BBC Newsnight
The Newsnight newspaper examines the story of the man who could be the UK’s prime minister and what that path to power could lead to. Subscribe here:
Sir Keir Starmer was elected head of the Labor Party six months ago when the UK was locked up against coronavirus. Westminster was then in charge of the virus and opposition rules were temporarily suspended. The examination of the man who had been elected to parliament five years earlier was perhaps more false than what had otherwise happened. Sir Keir is identified as a “socialist” like Jeremy Corbyn, so what sets his policy apart? And when Jeremy Corbyn was a former member of the shadow cabinet, did Starmer run his leadership campaign until last year’s general election? Newsnight’s Political Editor, Lewis Goodall, investigates the story of the man who could have been prime minister, and what that path to power could lead to. Following this report on BBC Two, EU Secretary-General Len McCluskey tweeted: “Before I get this out of my hand, let me say that language is important and I apologize to Peter Mandelson and anyone else if mine has hurt me.” Newsnight is the main BBC news and current affairs television program – with strong analysis, discussion, exclusivity and dialogue.
