Wallowa – Superintendent Tami Jones jumped on the intercom at mid-morning Thursday, October 15, letting students in the Wallowa School District know that the building was shaking.

But the walls did not budge. Instead, the schools were participating in The Great Shakeout, an annual earthquake training that schools in Oregon conduct to prepare students and faculty in the event of an earthquake.

However, preparing for an emergency is more than just putting under a desk for two minutes and then vacating the building, as students did on October 15th. Upcoming training on “Dangerous Person on Campus” – staff and students prepare for it.

“The purpose of safety training is to really help students and staff know what to do and feel comfortable and confident,” said Jones. “If there was an emergency, it would be more automatic.”

Far from covering it up, teachers discuss other options for students due to their location in the school. Staff also have scenarios on how to guide students if they are outside due to an earthquake.

“If cover is not available (indoors), children will be taught to stand in interior entrances or narrow corridors against a wall that carries weight without windows, to bend over, cover, and wait until or until the other direction,” Jones said.

Once the two minutes ended, students from the elementary and high school vacated the building.
