Iceland earthquake interrupts the live interview of the prime minister

Catherine Jacobsdottir was discussing the impact of the pandemic on tourism with The Washington Post when her house began to shake, clearly astonishing the Icelandic leader.

“Oh my God, there is an earthquake,” she gasps. “Sorry, there is an earthquake now. Wonderful.”

But Jacobsdottir quickly returned to the topic with a laugh: “Well, that’s Iceland” and goes on to answer the question.

She added later, “Yes, I’m completely fine, the house is still going strong, so don’t worry.”

Jacobsdottir, 44, has been Prime Minister of Iceland since 2017.

The 5.6-magnitude earthquake hit Tuesday afternoon 10 km southwest of Hafnarfjordur, a coastal town near the capital Reykjavik, according to the US Geological Survey, which measures earthquakes around the world.

The earthquake led to reports of damage in the vicinity of the capital. Earthquakes are common in Iceland, which has a vast landscape dotted with dozens of volcanoes.

Jacobsdottir is not the first leader in the world to be boycotted by this year’s earthquake. In May, New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern was discussing lifting coronavirus restrictions when a 5.8-magnitude earthquake struck near the capital, Wellington.

When the camera shook, the still smiling Ardern told Newshub AM Show host Ryan Bridge, “We’re having a little bit of a quake here, totally – a good jolt here.”
