End Sars protests: people are “shot dead” in Lagos, Nigeria – BBC News
Several people involved in a protest against police brutality have been reported shot dead or injured in Nigeria’s largest city, Lagos. Witnesses said up to 12 people were killed and others wounded when soldiers were shot. Amnesty International has said it has “credible reports” of deaths. The state governor said about 25 people were injured, but denied there were any dead. An indefinite limit of 24 hours has been imposed on Lagosi and other regions. Protests against a now-disbanded police unit (Special Anti-Robbery Squadron (Sars)) have been going on for two weeks, with protesters gathering the hashtag #EndSars on social media. As tensions escalated on Wednesday, police in various districts of Lagos fired shots into the air to disperse protesters defying the cover, the BBC’s Nduka Orjinmo Abuja reported in the capital. Police were forced to re-Lekki toll on the porch (they were shooting Tuesday) demonstrators gathered again. President Muhammadu Buhari has called for “understanding and calm”. Please subscribe HERE .
