April 1st … a purely beautiful morning … members of the world dilemma at the Mule Barn cafe looked around.
“Did anyone see Dud this morning?”
“Not me. Herb didn’t see either, think about it.”
“Hey, that’s right,” Steve said. “Actually, I haven’t seen much of those two in the past week.”
“You work, you think?” said the doc.
“Yes. What was I thinking?”
Quiet were the sweet pastries and Steve’s dressing.
“The last time I talked to them,” Doc said, “they were planning something for April Fools. I wonder if they came up with something.”
Sirens lifted them out of the coffee and into the front window in time to see the rural firestorm screaming past the mountains. Steve stepped outside and pulled his binoculars out of the truck.
“Baldy Rock is on fire!” he cried. Surely black smoke was pouring from the summit of Baldy Rock, some ten miles northwest.
“You know,” said the doc. “Nothing can be ignited at Baldy Rock.”
“That’s right. Let’s go!”
The firestorm came first, of course, by a winding track that would drive a fire truck if the driver was optimistic and a little stupid. Firefighters were dropping a burning pile of dead tires in the middle of the summit.
The fire chief mumbled to himself about the first of April, the old ladies who had the phone and the critical lack of coffee.
“What happened?” Doc asked.
“I received two calls this morning at about the same time from two old ladies who said the volcano was erupting.”
Doc turned to Steve. “We could go back to the Mule barn and finish our breakfast. Can you even find Duda and Herb there. I would actually bet on that.”
