Great tremor earthquake exercise at home during a pandemic | Schools

On Thursday, October 15, participants at the Great ShakeOut in California, the world’s largest earthquake drill, practiced duck-and-cover drills at home instead of school or work, due to the coronavirus pandemic and school closures.

Although more than 6.6 million California residents participated in this year’s training, participation is down from previous years. In 2019, 10.8 million Californians participated.

In 2020, global participation was over 29.4 million.

Of the participants enrolled in California, the majority shared with their school districts. More than 4 million teachers, staff, and students participated in earthquake drills in K-12 schools and school districts.

With distance learning, these exercises were conducted differently from the teachers and students who were accustomed to them when they were conducted in school.

San Bernardino City Unified School Safety Director, Eric Viteri, said conducting earthquake drills has actually helped students and teachers direct new attention to safety and earthquake preparedness at home.

Classes, such as the science class at Richardson Hay Prep School by Stephen Hernandez, interrupt their videoconferencing lessons with “duck, cover and wait” exercises in their home environments.

“When students are at home, they are in an environment that we have no control over, but we can have them look for places to cover, take care of their surroundings and encourage the safety of their families,” Viteri said.

In many cases, parents were able to participate in class exercises.

The teachers instructed their students how to duck, cover properly, stay away from things at risk of falling and use their cameras to let teachers see that every student is safe.

Securing heavy items, establishing an evacuation plan, and storing water, food, first aid and other emergency supplies is encouraged.

Vitieri noted that while students and teachers are no longer in the same room in the event of an emergency during class, students will still look to their teachers for guidance and comfort.

“Accountability still matters,” Vetere said. “We know some students may be home alone. There is still a level of responsibility to provide that leadership, as if the teachers were in the classroom.”
