A slight earthquake hits Dahsho area, and there was no news of damage

A slight earthquake struck the Dahshu area around mid-morning, but there were no reports of damage, according to the earthquake portal of Canada’s Natural Resources.

The strength of the earthquake at 10:18 AM measured 4.5 on the Richter scale and occurred at a depth of 11 km, about 164 km west of Fort Simpson.

After about an hour, the aftershock reached a magnitude of 3.9 at a depth of 20 km.

Earthquakes with strengths between 3.5 and 5.4 can rarely be felt but can cause damage, according to the scale of earthquakes that seismologists use to measure the amount of energy released.

The shaking occurred near the Mackenzie Mountains, which experience earthquakes occasionally because this area is somewhat seismically active, Andrew Schaeffer, a seismologist with the Canadian Geological Survey, told NNSL Media in August after two earthquakes in the same area.

Schaeffer said that the low population density of that part of Dahshu means that earthquakes are rarely felt.

Last Sunday, a previous earthquake of 4.7 magnitude hit slightly westward.
