Culver City Council considers ordinance to tackle “soft story” buildings

Culver City is studying a new earthquake strengthening law to address soft, weak, open-walled log buildings on the ground floor that are particularly prone to earthquakes.

Culver City may enact a new earthquake-strengthening ordinance to tackle Culver City’s “Soft Story” buildings and will hold a series of virtual meetings to gather input from the community (see more below).

In earthquakes, many multi-storey buildings with poor front wall lines and / or open “light storeys” (ie buildings with lower positions) performed poorly and collapsed. Under the Los Angeles City System on soft storey buildings, buildings most at risk have been identified by the following criteria:

Consists of two or more floors of a timber frame structure, built according to building code standards enacted prior to January 1, 1978, containing ground floor car park or other similar open floor space, information on the hypothetical meeting in Culver City
