A Himalayan suture region or Indus sewing region (ISZ) in Ladakh region where the Indian and Asian plates are joined, are found to be tectonically active, against the current understanding that it is a closed region.

The Ministry of Science and Technology said, “This may have major implications in terms of studying earthquakes, forecasting and understanding the seismic structure of mountain ranges as well as their evolution.”

A group of scientists from the Wia Institute of Himalayan Geology (WIHG), Dehradun, an independent institute of the Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India, found through observations and detailed mapping of the geological features that the traditional Himalayan sewing area was believed to be tectonically active locked.

They mapped the hinterland of Ladakh that makes up the remote part of the Himalayas. The study was recently published in the journal Technophysics.

Geologists note that sedimentary strata are tilted and broken, rivers are associated with raised terraces, and stony rocks exhibit fragile deformation that occurs at very shallow depths.

These distorted geological features were then dated in the laboratory at Dehradun using a technique called optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) (a method for carrying luminescence history of geological deposits) and the seismic data and erosion rate were reviewed.

The field and laboratory dataset suggested that the Indus Suture Zone (ISZ) was new tectonically active from the last 78,000-58,000 years ago and the last earthquake in 2010 with a force of low 4.0 near the village of Upshi that occurred due to a thrust rupture.

The Himalayas are known to consist of northerly submersible orientations such as main central propulsion (MCT), primary front propulsion (MBT), and main front propulsion (MFT).

According to the established models, all of these orientations are locked except for the MFT, and the general Himalaya distortion is only internalized with the MFT. The new findings, which indicate a distant fault in the suture region being new tectonically active, may require a serious review of existing evolutionary models using new technologies and a larger geological database.
