UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has defended the refusal to extend free school meals for children in England in the mid-term holidays, saying he is “very proud” of the government’s support so far. He said the government “will do everything in its power to ensure that children and children do not go hungry.” As pressure from the prime minister, as well as from his Conservative MPs, to rethink the issue, communities, cafes, local businesses and neighbors are taking steps – and exceptions – to leave a gap in government policy.
