37 years ago, the Bora earthquake shook Idaho

Boise, Idaho – It has been almost seven months since Idaho was hit by one of the strongest earthquakes to strike most of central and southern Idaho.

Shaker hit 6.5 outside Stanley on March 31.

But it was not the largest earthquake ever to hit Idaho.

It actually happened 37 years ago today … October 28, 1983.

It was Friday October 28, 1983 at 8:06 AM.

A 6.9-magnitude earthquake jolted the cities of Chalice and McKay for 30 to 60 seconds.

Brick and block buildings collapsed.

Sadly, two students – ages 6 and 7 – were buried where a storefront collapsed.

People who saw the blocks come down rushed to reveal the children but were unable to save them.

People in Washington, Montana, Oregon, Nevada, Wyoming, Utah and parts of Canada reported feeling an earthquake.

The ground’s roar and shift have caused landslides, landslides, and groundwater changes throughout the region, including changes to geyser activity in Yellowstone National Park.

The origin of the earthquake, about 10 miles deep below Idaho’s highest mountain, Bora Peak, spaced between the mountains and the valley 14 feet in places.
