Police say three people were killed in a knife attack on a church in the French city of Nice. Nice mayor Christian Estrosi said there was an attack “in the heart of Notre-Dame Basilica”. An elderly victim who had come to pray was “almost beheaded”. A suspect was shot and arrested shortly afterwards. Estrosi has spoken of “Islamofascism” and said the suspect has repeated “Allahu Akbar” (God is the greatest). President Emmanuel Macron is on his way to the stage. Counter-terrorism prosecutors have opened a murder investigation and France has raised its national security alert system to its highest level.
