The European-Mediterranean Seismic Center (EMSC) reported that a magnitude 4.9 earthquake occurred 1 hour 12 minutes before 116 kilometers north of Niafu, Tonga. The earthquake occurred at a relatively large depth of 146 km below the epicenter on the morning of Friday, October 30, 2020 at 7:45 am local time. The magnitude and other earthquake parameters could still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data, and a second report was released later by the USGS, which listed it as a 4.9 magnitude earthquake as well. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the earthquake should not have caused any major damage, but it was probably felt by many people as a slight shaking in the epicenter area.
