Search, rescue efforts continue after the earthquake

The Disaster Management Authority (AFAD) said in the early hours of Saturday morning that 24 people were killed and at least 804 injured when a 6.6-magnitude earthquake struck Izmir on the Turkish Aegean Sea on Friday.
At least 743 were injured in Izmir and in neighboring provinces, five in Manisa, two in Balikesir and 54 in Aydin.
Health Minister Fakhruddin Kujah said that 435 people are receiving treatment, 25 are undergoing intensive care and nine are undergoing surgery.
He also said that 364 have left hospitals after completing treatment and that medical and rescue teams are continuing to work in Izmir “to alleviate the pain.”

At least 389 aftershocks have been recorded, with 33 as strong as 4.0 magnitude, according to the AFAD.
Search and rescue operations have been completed on eight buildings in Izmir – Turkey’s third-largest city by population – while work continues on nine more, according to Environment and Urbanization Minister Murat Corum, who said damage assessment work has begun on public buildings.
The Disaster and Emergency Management Department said the quake struck at 2.51 pm local time (1151 GMT) at a depth of 16.54 kilometers (10 miles).
She added that one of the deaths was a result of drowning.
Izmir Governor Yavuz Selim Kosjar said that the earthquake caused a partial tsunami (tsunami) in the coastal region of Seferihisar, injuring at least one person.
More than 475 vehicles and nearly 4,000 rescue workers, along with 20 police dogs, were dispatched to the scene.
The Coast Guard command is participating with 116 personnel, 11 boats, three helicopters and a diving team.
The Turkish Red Crescent dispatched 112 staff, 137 volunteers, 27 vehicles and five mobile field kitchens with a capacity to serve more than 25,000 people.
Karim Knik, head of the Turkish Red Crescent, said that the capacity to feed 56,300 people has been established in Izmir.
And 960 disaster tents, 4,500 blankets and 3,672 beds have been sent to the area, according to the Disaster and Emergency Management Department.
Approximately 114,500 masks and 5,000 disinfectants were sent to the region for distribution by the Turkish Red Crescent’s public health and psychosocial support teams.
A total of 836 vehicles and 6,049 personnel have been assigned to search and rescue, medical and psychological support and humanitarian aid in the region, according to the Turkish Communications Directorate.
It added that three mobile coordination trucks, seven military cargo planes, a drone, six helicopters and 292 security personnel have been sent to the area.
Five million Turkish liras ($ 600,000) were sent to the region by the Ministry of Family, Labor and Social Services, and 3 million Turkish liras ($ 360,000) provided by the Disaster and Emergency Management Department.
The agency said that another earthquake measuring 5.1 magnitude hit the Aegean Sea, 20 km off the Kusadasi region in Turkey’s Aydin province.
The Disaster and Emergency Management Department said another 5.0-magnitude earthquake struck the Aegean Sea at 08.21 a.m. local time (0521 GMT) 17.26 km (10.72 miles) off Seferihisar.
Crisis Office of the Ministry of Defense
The Ministry of National Defense has established a crisis office, and two military helicopters are participating in the search and rescue efforts.
Istanbul Governor Ali Yerli Kaya said the earthquake was felt in his city, 328 km north of Izmir, but the city was not affected.
Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu said several neighboring provinces, including Usak, Denizli, Manisa, Balıkesir, Aydın and Mugla, suffered minor damage to several buildings.
There are no transportation or communication problems, said Adil Gresemiloglu, Minister of Transport and Infrastructure.
Agriculture and Forestry Minister Bekir Bakdemirli personally spoke by phone with the many victims who were trapped under the rubble and were later rescued.
Energy and Natural Resources Minister Fatih Donmez said that the ministry’s teams had been directed to the region to avoid energy supply problems.
Justice Minister Abdul Hamid Gul said that the regional public prosecutor’s office had initiated an investigation and that autopsy procedures and forensic services were provided without interruption.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed his solidarity and said that Turkey stands with “its citizens affected by the earthquake.”
“We have taken measures to start the necessary work in the region with all our relevant institutions and ministers,” he added.
Turkish Communications Director Fakhruddin Altun conveyed the condolences of the families and friends of the victims.
“We pray for no more casualties in Turkey or Greece, and we send our best wishes to all those affected by the earthquake,” he said on Twitter.
Altun added that Turkey is ready to help Greece if needed.
The National Observatory of the Athens Institute of Geodynamics initially estimated the quake’s strength to be 6.6 magnitude but later revised it to 6.7.
The observatory said that the missile hit the northwestern Greek island of Samos in the Aegean Sea.
