The death toll rises to 39 in Turkey’s earthquake

October 31 (UPI) – Turkish officials said on Saturday that the death toll from a 7.0 magnitude earthquake has risen to at least 39 and injured more than 800 others in the coastal city of Izmir.

The US Geological Survey said the quake occurred off the coast of the Greek city of Nyon Karlovacion, north of Seamus Island in the eastern Aegean Sea, at around 1:50 pm on Friday.

About 20 buildings collapsed in the city of Izmir, which is located on the western tip of Anatolia and has a population of 3 million.

Turkish Health Minister Fakhruddin Kuja said that 243 people were hospitalized, eight of them in intensive care. They included a mother and three children who were found 23 hours later in a collapsed building. One of the children died.

On Saturday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said he would visit the region to see the damage.

The leaders of Greece and Turkey, longtime rivals, said they had contacted each other on Friday.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said that he had called Erdogan to “offer my condolences for the tragic loss of life in the earthquake that struck our two countries.”

Argodan also offered his condolences to Greece.

“The two neighbors show solidarity in difficult times is more valuable than many things in life,” Ergudan wrote on Twitter.

The Aegean Sea is the site of historical seismic activity due to a network of underwater tectonic plates and faults. The US Geological Survey described the earthquake as an “internal event”, as it grinds the Africa plate against the Eurasia tectonic plate.

“While they are commonly plotted as points on maps, earthquakes of this size are more appropriately described as sliding over a larger fault area,” the US Geological Survey said.

The largest earthquake in recent memory in this region was the 1956 earthquake followed by aftershocks and a tsunami that killed 53 people and injured more than 100 in Greece. On July 20, 2017, a 6.6-magnitude earthquake in Bodrum, Turkey, killed two people.
