Turkey earthquake: A three-year-old girl is rescued alive after 65 hours trapped under rubble

The girl, identified by the authorities as Elif Prinsik, was rescued Monday morning, more than 65 hours after the devastating earthquake. Turkish Health Minister Fakhruddin Kujah said that Brensk’s mother and two others were rescued earlier, but unfortunately one of her brothers died.

News of the rescue came just hours after another child was found alive under the rubble and brought to the surface safely by rescue teams. Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) said 14-year-old Idil Siren was rescued after spending more than 58 hours trapped under a collapsed building.

In a video clip by phone showing the dramatic moment to save Siren, dozens of spectators were heard cheering enthusiastically after she was freed from the wreckage. Anadolu Agency said that she received first aid at the scene before being transferred to a local hospital.

Dozens were killed and hundreds injured after the earthquake – which measured 7.0 according to the US Geological Survey – struck the Aegean Sea on Friday, shaking parts of Greece and Turkey.

The quake struck 14 kilometers (8.7 miles) northeast of the town of Nyon Carlovacion in Samos, according to the US Geological Survey, at a relatively shallow depth of 21 kilometers (13 miles), making its impact strongly felt at ground level around the epicenter.

20 buildings in Izmir were seriously damaged in the quake, according to Izmir Mayor Tonk Sawyer, most of them in the middle-class Berkeley district.

Turkey’s disaster management agency said that more than 900 aftershocks have been recorded since the initial earthquake, 42 of which had a magnitude of 4.0. The earthquake also caused what the authorities described as a “small tsunami,” which caused street floods on Friday in parts of the wider province of Izmir, Turkey, as well as in Samos.
