The young survivor recounts the terrible earthquake

A young man, who lost both of his parents in the 6.6-magnitude earthquake, last Friday, recounted terrifying moments from the earthquake to Anadolu Agency.

“We lived there for six years. My mom and dad were there [home] During an earthquake. Arif Emre Nieman, a sophomore engineering student, said Monday, “They are lost, I am the only one left.”

Nyman said there is a need to build sturdier homes. “While the neighboring houses were durable, our houses were destroyed and very few people fled our building,” he added.

Nieman said he was in his room next to his bed when the tremors hit him and a wall fell on his legs.

“Since my torso, my arm and my head were in a gap, I could call and scream. They found me within two or three hours and took me out,” he said.

So far, 91 people have died and 106 people have been pulled out of the rubble as search and rescue efforts continue.

On Monday, 3-year-old Elif Prinsik was pulled from the rubble some 65 hours after the earthquake.

Earlier, a 14-year-old girl was pulled from the rubble 58 hours after the earthquake.

Turkey is among the most seismically active regions in the world as it sits on several active fault lines. It has suffered devastating earthquakes in the past, including the 7.6 Marmara earthquake in 1999.
