Saving the second child after the death toll from Turkey’s earthquake rose to 109

The Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) said on Tuesday that another three-year-old boy was rescued from Friday’s earthquake in Izmir, Turkey’s third-largest city, whose death toll rose to 109.

The agency said in a statement that the earthquake injured 994 people, and 147 people are still being treated. She said rescuers were still walking the remains of five buildings as part of the search effort.

Turkey’s official Anatolia News Agency said three-year-old girl Aida Cizjin was rescued on Tuesday, 91 hours after the earthquake. The news agency said that Jezen was seen conscious and aware of her surroundings when she was taken to the hospital. Another child of the same age was rescued on Monday.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan described Najat Gezin as a “miracle” and published photos of her in the hospital.

More than 3,500 tents and 13,000 beds are being used as temporary shelter in the city in western Turkey on the Aegean coast. The Disaster and Emergency Management Department said that nearly 8,000 individuals and 25 rescue dogs were participating in the relief effort.

The agency said Friday’s earthquake had a magnitude of 6.6 on the Richter scale. The US Geological Survey measured the magnitude of the earthquake at 7.0. The epicenter was 20 km off the Turkish coast.

It was the deadliest earthquake to hit Turkey in nearly a decade. This came as the government worked to address multiple crises, including the COVID-19 pandemic and the devaluation of the lira.
