The WHO publishes a series of profiles on climate change and health in island states
Small island developing states (SIDS) are among the most vulnerable to climate change in the world. Yet many island nations are also leading in the global response to climate change, ambitious emission reduction targets, adaptation actions and the development of climate-resilient health systems.
On November 4, 2020, the WHO, along with the Americas (PAHO) and Western Pacific (WPRO) regions, announced a series of SID health and climate change countries. Country profiles have been published for: Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Saint Lucia, Trinidad and Tobago and Tuvalu (in Tuvaluan). It is in addition to recently published profiles in the Solomon Islands and Tuvalu.
The WHO UNFCCC Health Profiles and Climate Change Profiles provide a vital picture of the impact of climate change on health and make progress in building climate-resilient health systems. It is an ongoing project and country profiles are regularly updated to monitor progress in addressing the health threats of climate change.
Country profiles represent national climate projections; indicators of health vulnerability and the impact of climate change on health; policy responses to health and climate change; and recommendations for addressing national health threats posed by climate change.
Profiles are a part WHO Special Initiative on Climate Change and Health in SIDS and associated Caribbean and Pacific action plans. The SIDS Special Initiative aims to provide political, technical, scientific and financial support to health authorities from island states to improve understanding and address the impact of climate change on health.
These countries are increasingly facing a range of climate-related health risks, including rising sea levels flooding populated land; ocean-dependent livelihoods threatened by sea warming and ocean acidification; more extreme weather events (such as more intense tropical cyclones); food and nutrition insecurity and the spread of infectious and vector-borne diseases.
These country profiles show that these are not just future threats, but health impacts that are being felt now.
Limited access to international climate finance is often cited in country profiles as a key obstacle to island states stepping up their response to the impacts of climate change.
Nevertheless, these country profiles show that despite these challenges, SIDS sets ambitious goals and works to implement policies that will increase their adaptive capacity and resilience to the health challenges posed by climate change.
