The death toll from the Aegean earthquake rises to 115 as research continues in Turkey’s Izmir

Disaster management authorities said early on Wednesday that search and rescue efforts were focused on two buildings in the western Turkish city of Izmir, as the death toll from Friday’s earthquake in the Aegean Sea rose to 115.

Authorities said two of the quake victims were teenagers on the Greek island of Samos.

On Tuesday, 90 hours after the earthquake, rescuers in Izmir pulled out a girl alive from the rubble, and searches are now focused on two buildings.

It was the deadliest earthquake to hit Turkey in nearly a decade.

The Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) said that the earthquake affected 1,035 people in Izmir, and 137 people are still receiving treatment.

The agency said that more than 4,600 tents and 17,000 beds are being used in temporary shelters in Turkey.

Turkey passes through fault lines and is prone to earthquakes. More than 500 people were killed in the 2011 earthquake in the eastern city of Van, while another earthquake in January this year killed 41 people in the eastern province of Elazig.

In 1999, two powerful earthquakes killed 18,000 people in northwestern Turkey. The Disaster and Emergency Management said Friday’s earthquake had a magnitude of 6.6, with 1,670 aftershocks.
