ATHENS – The island of Samos, in the northeast Aegean, rose by 18-25 cm after the strong earthquake on Friday, October 30th, with its epicenter at sea 16 kilometers northwest of the island.

The astonishing rise was observed in the northern and southern parts of the island, according to an announcement by a research team from the Faculty of Geology and Environment of the National University and Kapodistrian University of Athens, made up of Professor Efthimis Likas and Dr. Dr Marilia Jojo and Dr Ioana Triantafilo, with the participation of seismologist Dr Gerasimos Papadopoulos.

The team conducted a comprehensive study of the Samos earthquake, its impact on the island’s buildings, the associated geodynamic phenomena, the tsunami that followed, and the distortion of terrestrial formations.

From the total observations made at the site, it is indicated that the permanent height of the island ranges from 18 to 25 cm.

Residents felt the Samos earthquake, which killed two young men on the island, across Greece and neighboring Turkey, while causing severe damage and leveling a number of buildings to the ground in the city of Izmir, killing 113 people and injuring more than a thousand others.
