Video: Rescue workers relax a Turkish man trapped under the rubble of an earthquake

Izmir, Turkey – Turkish rescue workers kept a man trapped under a collapsed building quietly while working to clear rubble around it after an earthquake.

A 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Samos, Greece, on October 30, as a result of movement along the Eurasian tectonic plate in the eastern Aegean Sea. The natural disaster destroyed several buildings in the city of Izmir, in western Turkey, and flooded the town of Seferihisar with a small tsunami.

In the aftermath, the Turkish Interior Ministry shared a video of a rescue worker comforting a citizen, identified only as Halim, who was trapped under the rubble of a collapsed building.

“We won’t leave without you. Be patient for a little longer,” the emergency worker can be heard telling the man in the footage. “You haven’t quit yet. Don’t give up now.”

The video continues to show the first responders providing medical assistance to the man after he was successfully rescued from the rubble.

The earthquake was followed by at least 900 aftershocks, and several thousand rescue workers have spent time since rescuing trapped residents and pets in at least nine buildings, including two young girls who were removed alive from a collapsed apartment building on Monday, according to a variety of Reports.

Around 1,000 people, most of them in Turkey, were injured in the earthquake, and the death toll passed 90 on November 2. It is estimated that approximately 20 people are still trapped in the rubble of a collapsed apartment building in Izmir.

The accident is the deadliest earthquake in Turkey since 2011, when an earthquake in the city of Van killed 500 people, according to the country’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority. Because the country passes through fault lines, it is vulnerable to such tremors, including tremors that killed 41 people in January. Two earthquakes in northwestern Turkey in 1999 struck a total of 18,000 people.
