Construction contractors arrested after the Izmir earthquake

Nine people were arrested as part of an investigation into buildings that collapsed during last week’s earthquake in the western province of Izmir, the official Anatolia News Agency said on Thursday.

At least 114 people are believed to have died in the earthquake, which caused extensive damage to buildings including high-rise buildings.

A total of 11 suspects are being searched for, Anatolia said, in connection with six buildings that failed to withstand the earthquake.

This includes the contractor, referred to by his initials as MBU, who is still in intensive care after an apartment building collapse that killed several of his family. In a tragic twist of fate, MBU’s father named the building after his grandson, who died in the 1992 Erzincan earthquake, Sabah reports.

There was growing public anger at the high death toll from the earthquake in Izmir, which according to government figures was 6.6 on the Richter scale.

Seismic events of similar size caused much less damage in other parts of the world, again shifting attention to the quality of building construction in Turkey.

Speaking to Hurriyet newspaper, a construction worker involved in many of the construction projects worst affected by the Izmir earthquake said that there had long been concerns about safety.

“The floor on which we stepped on was shaking while we were carrying supplies with a wheelbarrow,” he said.

“We were waiting for these buildings to collapse in the first earthquake that would happen here.”
