More than 7,400 people reported feeling a magnitude 4.5 earthquake, which struck 20 kilometers southwest of Christchurch near Rolleston at 7.26 am on Friday.

A 4.5-magnitude earthquake jolted downtown Christchurch on Friday morning.

According to GeoNet, a moderate earthquake was recorded at a depth of 9 kilometers, 20 kilometers southwest of Christchurch near Rolleston. A score of 4.1 was initially reported but was upgraded soon after.

Just over 7,400 people reported feeling the earthquake on GeoNet, and most respondents said the shaking was mild.

Several Cantabrian residents took to social media to tell that they felt the earthquake, with one saying they had “shook and shuddered but not damaged” in their home.

Glenn White, director of operations for New World Rolleston, said he and other employees were concerned that the quake might have been stronger.

“It was good rattling, but nothing fell off the shelves. It was a decent thud at first, and we always think,“ Will it last? ”So that was the main concern.
