Chemacom agreement for seismic station

A new station in Chimacom to monitor seismic activity will help give people on the West Coast a “critical warning before a devastating earthquake,” according to officials with the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network.

The Chimacum School Board unanimously signed a plan to put the monitoring station on school district property at a board meeting last week.

In a letter attached to the land use agreement between the network and the school district, Dr. Paul Bowden, Director of PNSN, told the school board that the new station “will give people a crucial time to take preventive action.”

As part of the ShakeAlert Earthquake Early Warning System, the new station will be installed at the Chimacum Junior / Senior High School southeast of the school’s football stadium.

The Pacific Northwest Earthquakes Network, a collaborative effort between the University of Washington, the University of Oregon and the US Geological Survey, began in 1969 with five seismometers.

The network now includes more than 300 seismic stations and is the second largest seismic network in the United States.

Just last week, on Thursday, October 29, network stations reported a magnitude 1.6 event just north of the Hood Canal Bridge, at a depth of 14.42 miles.

In his message to Chimacum School officials, Bodin noted that the ShakeAlert system can quickly detect a powerful earthquake, ‘and instantly send an alert to the public before the destructive shaking has time to reach them. The Chimacum site will be named “UW.CHIM”, and the Chimacum School Board has approved a five-year agreement to allow UW to install the monitoring station.

The agreement will automatically renew every five years.

The monitoring station will be powered by two solar panels, and wireless seismic data will be sent from the unit to a Ubiquiti Nanobeam puck antenna outside high school before the data is routed to an Ethernet container inside the classroom.
