Fire officials offer safety tips after the earthquake in southern New England

East County, Rey (WPRI) – The United States Geological Survey confirmed an earthquake Sunday morning near the coast of southeast Massachusetts.

A 3.6-magnitude earthquake struck the Bay of Buzzards around 9:10 a.m., according to the US Geological Survey. People around Southern New England have reported for 12 News that they feel their homes shake.

The New Bedford Fire Department advises anyone who has felt an earthquake to check their gas lines, furnaces, and chimneys for potential damage and make sure they have an effective carbon monoxide detector.

“Not a lot of people use heat right now, and that’s our fear,” said Deputy Fire Chief James Fortin. “Our fear is that once a cold starts, our first cold snap, people will suffer damage that they were not aware of, release heat, and we’ll have multiple accidents carbon monoxide.”

If you notice any loose pipes or fallen bricks, call the gas company or the local fire department emergency line.

Dr John Ebel, a research scientist at the Weston Observatory, said the size of the earthquake could change once inspections are carried out. He estimated it was actually about 3.6 degrees.

Ebel said that earthquakes of this scale occur in New England about once a year, but that they often occur in places that pass unnoticed by the general public.

There is a possibility of aftershocks over the next few days, according to Abel, but they are likely weaker than the initial quake and not everyone may feel them.

Earthquakes of 3-4 magnitude are usually harmless, although there have been some reports of structural damage in New Bedford and Dartmouth. The Red Cross was seen visiting homes and there were reports of damage.

Earthquakes of a magnitude of 1-2 are most common in southern New England. The New Bedford District has felt it most recently in October 2017 (1.2 degrees) and January 2014 (1.9 degrees) while Rhode Island has seen many of them over the past few years:
