Detective EJ Folds of North Andover Police Department was surprised by the “unusual” rumbling sound in his kitchen Sunday morning, especially from his refrigerator.

“The epicenter was on the northern coast of Bay of Bazards,” said Paul Caruso, a geophysicist at the US Geological Survey. “So far, we have 20,000 people who went to our website to tell us they felt the earthquake.”

The earthquake – which struck five miles underground and affected five states – reached the farthest point in Massachusetts at Westfield.

The earthquake struck Connecticut as far as Milton. Felt it all over Rhode Island, as far south as Long Island Sound in New York.

Caruso said the earthquake arose 6.8 miles south of Place Corner in Dartmouth.

The United States Geological Survey revised the magnitude of the earthquake from 4.0 to 3.6.

Although the earthquake was not strong enough to cause more than cracking concrete, Caruso said, the aftershocks of an earthquake of this magnitude could be felt in the coming weeks. He added that earthquakes in the region are not rare.

“Since 1973, we have recorded 26 earthquakes within 50 miles of the epicenter,” he said.
