Experts say homeowners should check for potential damage after the recent earthquake

Providence, RI (WPRI) Residents of southern New England woke to the ground shaking Sunday morning when a 3.6-magnitude earthquake struck the Bay of Buzzards, according to the US Geological Survey.

Dr. John Ebel, a research scientist at the Weston Observatory, said the earthquake was felt as far south as New Hampshire and as far west as Hartford, Connecticut.

The New Bedford Fire Department advises anyone who has felt an earthquake to check their gas lines, oven and chimney for potential damage and make sure they have a carbon monoxide detector working.

If there is no apparent damage, GEM Plumbing Vice President Home and Business Services Joseph Andrade said homeowners should do a visual check to make sure nothing has changed or is located.

“Check any of the gas pipes, or anything that has to do with the house’s pipes, to make sure nothing is broken and there are no leaks,” Andrade said.

Andrade said homeowners who smell like gas should be evacuated immediately and call 911.

He said, “I would like to call the authorities to shut it down, and ask a licensed professional to come in and look at it and make repairs.”

12 News learned that the National Grid checked gas and electrical systems across Rhode Island and Massachusetts shortly after Sunday’s earthquake. There were no reports of damage.

Another sign to look out for is a change in water pressure, Andrade said.

“Sometimes you hear water leaking, or you see a water leak, or something underground is pinched or cut,” he said. “Homeowners will notice a decrease in the water pressure.”

In the event that another earthquake strikes the area in the near future, Andrade suggested making sure all pipes are properly secured and installing equipment to prevent further damage.
