Earthquakes once again hit Colorado near the Utah state border

A 3.8-magnitude earthquake and two smaller aftershocks were recorded Sunday morning south of Bedrock, Colorado, according to the US Geological Survey and the University of Utah.

The magnitude 3.8 earthquake occurred at 4:19 am from a depth of about 1.2 miles. Aftershocks of strength 2.2 and 2.7 struck the same area at 6:32 am and 6:42 am, and there were no reports of damage.

Bedrock is about 8 miles east of the La Sal Mountains in the Utah state line.

Jim Bischman, a seismologist at the University of Utah seismograph stations that track regional earthquakes, said Sunday’s earthquakes near the Lower Dolores River may have been caused by a brine injection well near the salinity control facility in the Paradox Valley.

“It is very likely that it was induced by the salt water injection,” he said.

On March 4, 2019, a 4.5 magnitude local earthquake hit the same area of ​​the injection well, and there were multiple aftershocks. It has also been linked to a saline injection facility by seismologists. The earthquake was felt in Moab, Dove Creek, Cortez and Twaoc.

After the 2019 earthquake, the reclamation office’s brine injection well facility was temporarily closed to study well capacity and earthquakes. The plant intercepts the drainage of brine groundwater into the Dolores River and injects it 2.9 miles underground to improve water quality in the Dolores and Colorado Rivers.

But the unintended result of pumping brine deep into the Earth were thousands of human-induced earthquakes.

In April, the plant was restarted, cutting injection volumes by a third in the hope that reducing pressure and volume would avoid the resulting earthquakes.

“The system has worked well for a long time, but there is a limit to the amount of water you can pump there,” said Bishman. “The fluid appears to have hit a septum, and is not spreading away from the well, which causes an increase in pressure.”

He said the recent earthquake was likely to be in Naturita to the east. An earthquake of magnitude 3.8 could shake items on the shelf or cause minor landslides in already unstable areas, but there have been no reports of any.

A total of 10 earthquakes of magnitude 3.0 or more have occurred 15 miles from the epicenter of the Sunday earthquake since 1997, including the 3.4 magnitude earthquake on September 16, 1997, according to the University of Utah seismograph stations.

When engineers installed the Paradox Valley salinity control project in 1996 on the Lower Dolores River, the result was improved water quality in the nearby Colorado River and for millions of people and farms downstream.

In December, the Reclamation Office released a draft Environmental Impact Statement to analyze alternatives to continuous salinity control at the site.

“Due to the increase in aquifer pressure and the induced earthquakes, and the disposal rates of brine had to be significantly reduced in response, a new facility is needed to control and dispose of the brine solution,” she said.

The facility intercepted and injected approximately 95,000 tons per year of saline into an injection well. The proposed alternatives seek similar amounts to be eliminated, to be funded by the federal government.

The injected saline fluid has been known to cause earthquakes by adding lubrication and pressure to fault lines. An estimated 6,000 mostly smaller earthquakes have been caused by a paradoxical injection well since the 1990s, according to government reports and seismologists.
