Some maids living in Spain have been banned from leaving their employers ’homes in the pandemic of the coronavirus. The union that represents them has heard about 100 women say they have been locked up inside for months. It says that the maids who live there were often treated as “current slaves” of the country and that the blockade has made things worse. Domestic workers are more at risk of being exploited and abused because they do not have the legal rights that other workers have. According to the Spanish government, at least 22,000 have been released since the pandemic began. Jean Mackenzie, a European reporter, spoke to the girls who live there about their experiences. Two of them, the ones we call Isabel and Maria, have changed their names to protect their identity. This report was filmed during the local mitigation of Covid-19 regulations.
