The area felt about 15 seconds of shock waves from New York to New Hampshire when a 3.6-magnitude earthquake shook the region at 9:10 am on Sunday morning.

The Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority, which maintains the four saltwater stretches connecting the Conanicot and Aquidnik islands to the mainland, said engineers were sent to assess the Bell, Mount Hope, Sakonet and Verrazano River bridges. They found no problems after using the protocols that were specifically developed for post-earthquake evaluation. As part of those studies, special attention was paid to alignment of joints on bridges.

Lori Caron Silvera, executive director of the semi-public agency, said the safety and structural integrity of the four regions is the Authority’s “top priority”.

In an interview with The New York Times, geophysicist Paul Caruso said there have been 26 earthquakes in southern New England since 1963, but that this was the largest since the magnitude 5.6 earthquake that shook central New Hampshire in 194.

“People feel the earthquake in this region at a very far distance, because the rocks in this region are very close and very old, so they transmit energy very well from earthquakes,” he said.
