Tim White | A year later, there is another personal account

It was one of those moments, like 9/11, or the 1994 earthquake, or, for previous generations, the JFK assassination. You will always remember where you were and what you were doing when you got the news.

This morning was a year ago. Still in bed, I was just starting to flicker to get ready for the day. My phone started to explode – quick text messages were coming first from the newsroom staff, then from family.

She shot Saugus High School. Who can roll over?

In an instant, I was intensely aware of two very pressing interests. Those who don’t know me personally will correctly assume that one of them was making sure we had reporters and photographers heading in the right direction, and our staff would be safe and effective at the same time covering the story.

But there was also another personal concern, which made me very frightened: My younger sister works as a teacher at Saugus High. It is our home university. We graduated four years ago, and she has studied there for most of her career.

So, when I heard “gunshots at Saugus High School,” my heart jumped in my throat, just like anyone else who has a loved one on that campus, be it a student or an employee.

I texted my sister thinking to myself, It’s not happening here, is it?

she was.

Our exchange went like this, starting a few minutes after the shooting and it happened over the course of the morning, while she was looking for students in her class, and as the response to the incident progressed and more information began to emerge, including some information in the midst of the moment that later turned out to be changed correct:

“Are you okay? Is this a real accident?”

“Okay for the time being.”

“Close?”

“Yes.”

“Is the shooter active?”

IDK.

“Have you heard shots?”

“No.”

“Well … at least two people were injured. Are you still inside? The police are looking for a suspected Asian man wearing black clothes. … at least four people were injured.”

“It’s still closed in the classroom.”

“The cops are walking around cleaning rooms. So we hope they get to you soon. And let me know when they wipe your room.”

“OK.”

“It appears the suspect is at liberty but not on campus anymore. At least 5 victims. 2 critical. Are you still in class?”

“In the gym, get ready to head to Central Park.”

“Thanks. Holy s—. One victim killed. In Central yet?”

“On the bus.”

“Glad you are doing well. F-. “

When the dust subsided a bit, I asked my sister if she wanted to speak to a reporter. I refused, and that was of course totally fine, but at that point, I felt like I had to ask, because once I knew she was okay, I had to go back to the corner and be the news guy, and that was one of the biggest, worst stories we’ve covered here. .

Later on, I felt like a fool to my question. This job can put you in some uncomfortable situations when you cover the community you live in, where you grew up, and where your family lives.

In that coverage, the tragic impact of a decision by a 16-year-old student to bring a gun to school and start shooting – and the heartbreaking accounts that followed of his young victims, including two who killed them before he committed suicide, and left many questions unanswered .

There were tales of heroism, of a community coming together to support each other at a time of great sadness and fear. Some of those stories are told on our pages today, on the first anniversary of that fateful day.

The following year, we saw this shooting, like many others, spark controversial discussions about weapons, and balance the Second Amendment with public safety. We even learned a phrase we hadn’t heard much before, at least not locally: “stealth gun,” which means the type of unlicensed weapon that can be assembled from parts purchased online.

I hope to understand everything, or to offer deep words of wisdom to heal wounds and offer a solution to make sure such wounds do not recur again. But, like many others, I struggle with things like this. Selfishly, as I think of November 14, 2019, I can’t stop thinking about this:
