Report that residents do not want to evacuate their homes even under the risk of collapse

A report issued by the Istanbul Statistics Office on November 14 revealed that nearly a quarter of Istanbul’s residents are unwilling to leave their homes even if earthquake risk reports are issued in the buildings they live in, indicating that the buildings are vulnerable to collapse. More than 40 percent of respondents said they were unfamiliar with the concept of the “life triangle,” which describes how to survive under the debris from a major earthquake.

About 72 percent of respondents stated that they do not have an earthquake emergency kit, and about 52 percent of residents said they did not know of any earthquake clusters nearby.

When talking about the potential consequences for the building they live in, about 22 percent of respondents said they believed their building would be demolished, while 64 percent indicated that the building could suffer moderate or slightly higher damage in the event of a 7.0-magnitude earthquake. About 13.5 percent of those interviewed believed that there would be no harm to the building they live in.

When asked what they would do if reports indicated that their building was at risk of collapsing during an earthquake, about 62.5 percent of respondents answered that they would move to a safer home.

But more than 22 percent of respondents said they would not leave their homes and would continue to live in the same building.

About 80 percent of the respondents, who said they would stay in the same building, indicated that the main reason was their financial inefficiency.

According to many experts, it is only a matter of time when a large earthquake hits Istanbul, which has a population of more than 16 million.
