Caritas helps Turkey earthquake victims cope with winter

Relief International is facilitating shipments of warm clothing, heaters and other items.

As winter approaches in areas affected by a 6.6-magnitude earthquake in Turkey, Caritas International has established a two-month emergency program to provide winter clothing, heaters and other emergency supplies.

Caritas is a confederation of 165 Catholic organizations for relief, development and social service.

The earthquake struck off the coast of Turkey on October 30th in the Southern Aegean Sea and was felt in neighboring countries such as Greece, Bulgaria and Macedonia. Reports indicate that 114 people were killed and 1,035 others were injured. An estimated 15,000 people sleep in tents in parks, recreation areas, campuses, playgrounds or in the homes of relatives or friends. It is expected that more people will take to the streets, as many of the damaged buildings, which have become extremely dangerous to housing, will be destroyed.

The Caritas Turkey program in Izmir will help 2,500 people cope with their losses due to the earthquake and help them cope with a rapidly approaching winter. Caritas will provide vital items that people may have lost during the earthquake such as diapers, baby formula milk, blankets, beds, winter clothes and household appliances for those temporarily transferred by the government.

As the weather gets colder every day, additional warm clothes, blankets and heaters will be needed. Caritas will continue to assess the needs to help those living in precarious situations to ensure that they receive assistance in the long term.

“Despite the global crisis, we really felt the solidarity of the local people in Izmir, who generously provided tangible assistance to those affected by the earthquake,” said Nader Nazim, Director of Caritas.
