Four years after the Kaikoura earthquake, Marlborough wineries are better prepared for a big jolt, says structural engineer Will Lomax.

The founder of Seismic Reservoir System Onguard says the 2013 Seddon earthquake was a wake-up call for wine companies and insurers, but the 7.8-magnitude Kaikōura earthquake in November 2016 really caught their attention.

“It caused a step change. I think people now realize that doing nothing is not an option,” says Will.

“We see a very different situation protecting wineries. There’s a product worth millions of dollars in storage, plus health, safety, and environmental risks.”

The Onguard system was designed after the Seddon event, and it relies on replaceable turban valves inside anchors in the base of the tanks.

Onguard structural engineers design the entire tank system so that when an earthquake strikes, the valves take the brunt of the energy, and protect other elements of the system, including viewing platforms, says Weil.

After 2013, many wineries were modernized or rebuilt with Onguard, and all of these systems came through the Kaikoura earthquake safely and intact, he says.

The earthquake caused an estimated $ 300 million in losses to the Marlborough wine industry, and lives would have been lost had it not been for midnight, Will says.

In the years that followed, Onguard was busy designing and installing systems, replacing valves when necessary, and modifying cabinets with carcass anchors.

The company also does a lot of work in the US (which Will says is not prepared at all for earthquakes) and has more than 20,000 units worldwide.

Weil says a new supplement system – Tygr Eye – activates seismic motion to any liquid reservoir, and sends the information to a database in the cloud. “After an event occurs, you can log into the database and check the status of the tanks stock. If there is a movement, it will tell us what the movement is and its effect.”
