Disaster preparedness: Ex-cop urges California residents to prepare for ‘Big One’

SAN DIEGO (Border Report) – Jesse Navarro has had a long and distinguished career in law enforcement with the San Diego Police Department and the San Diego District Attorney’s Office. His job now is to prepare Californians for “The Big One”. … this is a great earthquake.

He spends his days along the border area and throughout San Diego County dispensing and talking to people about disaster evidence collected by the California Office of Emergency Services.

Brochures explain what people should do in the event of a natural disaster. It details many things including how to set up escape routes, gas and energy shutdowns, and what to do with pets.

“It’s not a matter of whether or not we will have an earthquake,” Navarro said. “It’s a question of when and how big it will be.” “We want all California residents, all residents, to be informed, but it’s also information that we need to present to our friends across the border because if that happens they will be affected as well.”

Navarro says he has been distributing information materials to the largest employers in San Diego, so they can distribute the brochures to their workforce.

“All we want to do is provide the information; how to be ready if this happens. It’s very factual, simple, apolitical information and it’s free.”

Navarro is very serious about informing the public, he asks people to email him directly at [email protected] for a copy of the disaster preparedness guide. He says you don’t have to be a California resident to get one, considering that disasters happen everywhere.

“This information applies anywhere to any disaster,” Navarro said. “I know none of us like to think about it, but it’s something we need to think about.”
