Strong earthquake strikes northern Tokyo, not tsunami

A magnitude 5.7 earthquake jolted north of Tokyo on Sunday evening, local time. There was no tsunami.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the earthquake occurred at 7:05 pm and had a magnitude of minus 5 on the Japanese seismic scale from 0 to 7 in Tokai Village, Ibaraki Prefecture.

Severity 4 was recorded in some other municipalities in Ibaraki as well as in Fukushima and Tochigi.

Densities of 3 to 1 have been recorded in large areas of eastern and central Japan.

The agency says the focus was off the coast of Ibaraki at a depth of 45 kilometers.

It also says that it is believed that the earthquake was a consequence of the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake.

Agency officials warn of the possibility of more earthquakes during the next few days in areas hit by a tremor on Sunday.

Professor Furumura Takashi of the Seismological Research Institute of the University of Tokyo says the earthquake occurred at the confluence of two tectonic plates.

He says the area was seismically active, with a magnitude 7 earthquake occurring every ten years or so. He adds that the impact of the 2011 earthquake is still continuing.

Furumura urges people to bear in mind that the region is prone to powerful earthquakes and to improve their disaster preparedness.
