The European Parliament agrees to provide assistance to Croatia to repair earthquake damage

Zagreb, November 23 (HINA) – The European Parliament on Monday approved 683.7 million euros in aid from the European Solidarity Fund to help Croatia repair damage caused by the devastating earthquake that struck Zagreb and surrounding areas on March 22.

The European Parliament has just approved the mobilization of € 683.7 million from the Solidarity Fund to cope with the consequences of the earthquake in Zagreb and the surrounding region. Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic wrote on Twitter that this is the last step in the process which, after the advance of 89 million euros, will ensure that the remaining funds are spent on reconstruction.

An advance of 88.9 million euros, the highest ever from the European Solidarity Fund, was paid in August.

The aid to Croatia is part of a wider package of 823 million euros. The rest is intended to deal with the consequences of the floods in Poland (7 million euros) and includes 132.7 million euros of advance payments to Germany, Ireland, Greece, Spain, Croatia, Hungary and Portugal to deal with public health emergencies due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The decision was also welcomed by Croatian Member of the European Parliament Ziliana Zovko.

Zovko said this example of European solidarity will help Croatia recover from the consequences of the earthquake and the consequences of the unprecedented epidemic.

A total of 26,000 buildings in Zagreb were damaged by the 5.5-magnitude earthquake on March 22.
