Bernadette Hamill Graves, Saint Anthony’s oldest high school graduate, dies at age 105 – Press Telegram
Bernadette Hamel Graves has lived two world wars, the Great Depression, the 1933 Long Beach earthquake, and two viral pandemics – and she did so with joy and humor, an inspiration to generations of her family and friends.
But the life long journey of Graves, the oldest living alumna at St. Anthony’s High School in Long Beach, finally came to an end on Saturday, November 21, when she passed away at the age of 105, according to her niece, Therese Barkin.
Barkin said, “Bernadette was smart, kind, classy, fun and hard-working.” “She loved high heels, woven St. John’s shoes, and dancing and champagne. We’ll definitely miss her, but we know she’s dancing in heaven.”
Gina Maguire, Head of St. Anthony’s High School, said the school community mourned the loss of her oldest living youth, describing her as “an amazing graduate with a warm and positive energy and indomitable spirit in the face of adversity, and a role model for all of us. She is now, and always will be,” Saint. “
At the Graves Tribute party in 2013, Maguire said her resilience and spirit “always came along, and her belief that anything can be possible, if you work hard and do your best.”
Graves Bernadette Hamill was born on July 7, 1915 in Alberta, Canada. She lived on a 900-acre wheat farm with her father and mother, Eugene and Rose.
The world was already in shambles – and it was like this for years. World War I, which began a year before Graves was born, lasted until 1918. When she was 3 years old, the 1918 influenza pandemic spread, eventually killing 50 million people worldwide – including Graves’ adult brother 5 year old and uncle.
Tragedy struck again in 1931 when her father was killed in a strange accident after her horse-drawn cart capsized. Painful memories haunted the family so much that they moved to Long Beach, where they spent happy, sunny vacations.
By then, Graves had three sisters – Ethel, Mary, and Louise – and a brother Eddie. They attended St. Matthews Primary School and graduated from St. Anthony’s.
Graves’ older sister joined Saint Anthony when she was 14 and graduated when she was 15. And although she grew up dreaming of going to college and becoming a teacher, the death of her father forced her to go to work instead. At Newberry’s Department Store on Pine Avenue, in downtown Long Beach, to help support her mother and younger siblings.
In 1933 – four years after the Great Depression – a massive earthquake struck Long Beach, killing 120 people and causing millions of dollars in widespread damage.
“She was the eldest in the Hamel family, and assumed a lot of responsibilities early in life,” Barkin said.

Maguire said that Graves, although never going to college, was a communicative, organizer, and talented leader, whose career ultimately led her to running the hospital.
In 1936, Bernadette began working at the former Magnolia Hospital, on Pacific Avenue, and worked there for 50 years, eventually becoming the youngest woman to ever run the hospital in 1984, two years before her retirement.
In 1939, Graves met Mane Graves, married her, and settled in the St. Barnabas neighborhood of Long Beach. They had three children, Tom, John and Julie.
After 47 years of marriage, Manny Graves passed away in 1986 – the same year that Bernadette Graves retired.
In 1992 she married Walter Scott who passed away in 2006.
However, Graves continued to walk.
Longevity genes, after all, run in her family. She and her three sisters reached their 90s, becoming the youngest of them, Ethel Jones, of younger age in 2013 (their brother, Eddie, died before that).
The Hamel sisters celebrated their 90th birthday on Catalina Island, acting like teenagers, gossiping, laughing, and “stormy dancing,” as they used to do when they were younger, said Barkin, Jones’ daughter.
The Hamel sisters, dubbed “90-year-olds,” danced to their favorite songs, such as “In the Mood,” “String of Pearls,” and of course, “Avalon.”
Sadly, Louise Hamel Kautsky passed away at the age of 92 after a short illness.
When the family celebrated Graves’ 100th birthday at the Barkin House in 2015, she was dazzled by their favorite dress, the woven St. John’s dress.
Her daughter Julie said at the time, “My mom is not normal or dirty at all.” “She always wears elegant clothes. How many people do you know are wearing heels at 100 and watering their garden wearing Saint John’s knits?”
Sisters Hamel also have a long line of people that he will remember. Together, they have 27 sons, 74 grandchildren, and 34 great-grandchildren. They lived relatively close to each other in the Great Long Beach area. Bernadette was living in an auxiliary nursing home in Mission Viejo when she passed away.
When asked about the secret of her longevity at her 100th birthday party, Graves laughed and said, “Good parents, dancing and lots of champagne.”
Only two of Hamel’s four sisters are alive now – Mary Graves, 101, who married Bernadette Graves’ son-in-law, and Ethel, 97 – but the spirit of the other two “will live in our hearts,” Barkin said.
